The Lightning Thief – Limited Edition Book Design

Overview

I created a Limited Edition copy of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Other than the written story itself, I designed and produced the entire book on my own.

This process included creating an InDesign document with master pages to lay out a spread of over 300 pages, and paragraph styles to ensure continuity.

I identified a target audience for this book and based my design choices on such. Since The Lightning Thief was written for middle to high school age readers, I used Adobe Illustrator to create small vector illustrations for each chapter heading - keeping the pages interesting to combat shorter attention spans and adding a pop of color to attract the eye.

After the digital and print process, I organized the pages and bound the novel entirely by hand. As a final touch, I painted a gold trident on the cover to match the book’s headband.
